AAS 2026: ABOUT PhD AWARDS


 General Requirements

  • be an Indonesian citizen and be residing in and applying for the scholarship from Indonesia.
  • not be married or engaged to a person who is eligible to hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status, at any stage of the application, selection, mobilisation processes or while on scholarship in Australia.
  • not be applying for a visa to live in Australia.
  • Not have previously received a long-term Australia Awards Scholarship in the previous four years.
  • have satisfied any specific criteria established by Indonesia or the Government of Indonesia.
  • not be current-serving military personnel.
  • be able to satisfy all requirements of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection for a DFAT student visa.
  • Answer all relevant questions on the application form.
  • be willing and available to undertake full-time (Monday - Friday from 8 am to 4 pm) English for Academic Purposes (EAP) training in Indonesia prior to studying in Australia if offered a scholarship.


Specific requirements 

  • be applying for courses that fall within the priority fields of study (in my case: Digital transformation)
  • have a Grade Point Average (GPA, on a scale of 4.0) ; in my case ETG PhD 2,75
  • have an English language proficiency score, in my case: ETG PhD (IELTS 6.0, TOEFL ITP 552, TOEFL iBT 80, PTE Academic 56)
  • The IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE result must be valid on 1 January 2027. The test date must be no later than 1 January 2025. No other English language test (including the TOEFL prediction test) results will be accepted.
  • Provide contact details of the test centre for verification of TOEFL test results.
  • Already hold an undergraduate degree, if applying for a Masters. 
  • Already have a Masters degree if applying for a Doctorate program. Specialisation/professional certificate is not considered a Masters degree;
  • Not have previously received a long-term Australia Awards Scholarship in the previous four years;
  • Answer all relevant questions on the application form; and,
  • be willing and available to undertake full-time (Monday - Friday 8 am-4 pm) English for Academic Purposes (EAP) training in Indonesia prior to studying in Australia, if offered a scholarship. The duration of the EAP will range from 6 weeks to 12 months, depending on the scholar's level of English skills.
  • Additionally, If applying for PhD Awards, applicants will be restricted to staff of universities, higher education institutions, research institutes, key policymakers and targeted candidates in other agencies associated with DFAT activities.
  • It is highly desirable for the applicants of PhD Awards to have a letter of support from an Australian university for their proposed field of study.

Targeting of Awards
Australia Awards scholarships in Indonesia are offered in two main categories: Target and Non-Target categories.

Applicants from the Targeted category include:
  • Equity Target Group (ETG) consisting of:
  1. Persons with disabilities.
  2. Women from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  3. People from equity target provinces, namely East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, North Maluku, Papua, West Papua, Southwest Papua, South Papua, Highland Papua, Central Papua, West Sulawesi, West Kalimantan, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, and Lampung.
  • Indonesian Government Agencies, including candidates from government agencies (including central, provincial, or local), but excluding employees of state-owned enterprises. This category will be limited to employees with PNS (Civil Servant) status.

Applicants from the non-targeted category include those who fall outside the above categories.


Supporting Documents
Applicants must submit with their application all relevant supporting documents listed in the Scholarships Policy Handbook.

Applicants must also provide the following essential documents to meet the specific requirements for Indonesia. If at least one essential document is not provided, your application will be automatically rejected:

  • Applicants for the Masters Awards must attach a certified DIIl degree certificate/transcript if using a DIV or S1 extension certificate/transcript. Applicants for the PhD Awards must attach certified S1 and S2 certificates/transcripts.
  • The IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE result must be valid on 1 January 2027. The test date must be no later than 1 January 2025. No other English language test (including the TOEFL prediction test) results will be accepted.
  • Masters by Research or PhD applicants should provide two academic referee reports. Masters by Coursework should provide one academic referee report. A template for the preferred format of the report can be downloaded here.
  • Masters by Coursework should provide at least one other referee report (e.g. a work/organisation supervisor). A template for the preferred format of the report can be downloaded here.
  • The Nominating Agency Declaration document can be downloaded here.
  • Must be certified by the official records department of the institution/university that originally issued the document/s, or notary.

Important Dates
Application Dates (for study commencing in Australia in 2027)
  • Opening date: 1 February 2026
  • Closing date: 30 April 2026 (11.00 WIB)
  • Applications or supporting documents received after the closing date will not be considered.

Application timeline
The process of selecting Australia Awards recipients takes a minimum of four months from the application deadline to when applicants are conditionally selected for an award. Here is an overview of the application and selection process, so you always know what's going on.

Selection Process
Australia Awards in Indonesia seeks to produce alumni who have the attributes listed in a table below. Applicants’ ability to demonstrate existing skills and qualities in these areas will be highly regarded as an indication of their potential to contribute to development outcomes in the future.

Notes:
  • Applications will be shortlisted after eligibility checking.
  • Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
  • The selection process includes an interview. Applicants will be assessed against the following criteria:
  1. Academic competence.
  2. Potential outcome, specifically the contribution to development outcomes in Indonesia.
  3. Professional and personal leadership attributes, including relevant work experience.
  • Successful candidates will be notified no later than August 2026.
  • Awardee travel will be subject to meeting the requirements imposed by the Australian Government, as determined by the Department of Education, Skills, and Employment, and must meet the requirements imposed by State and Territory governments.
